thank you so much to everyone on socials for receiving this cover so warmly and supporting not only me/the book but also the artists who made the cover—designer, Liz Dresner, and artist Kei-Ella Loewe.
Liz has designed some really amazing covers (check out her portfolio!!!) and Kei-Ella is so so talented i mean just LOOK at this!!! i am beyond thankful and lucky to have their work on the cover of KILL CREATURES. here is an incomplete list of things i love about it
the tear
the TEAR!!! the SPARKLE on the TEAR!
the colors and textures! while i’m working my ideas tend to live in my brain not so much as words or concrete points but more as collections of color and texture—WILDER GIRLS was like green+brown+salt water+canvas+tree bark, while BURN OUR BODIES DOWN was orange+red+sunlight+paper+the feel of the skin of an apricot+when the paint on a house’s siding is flaking and the edges of the chips are really sharp. for a long time KILL CREATURES was just this bundle of blue+orange+purple+film grain+stone+feather oil2+the smell of gasoline and i really REALLY feel like that came through in this cover. it feels so true to the idea and to the feeling i want you to have when you read this book.
my books also each have an unrelated Involuntarily Assigned Brain Label Color like how ur science binder in high school was—or should’ve been—green bc green is science
KILL CREATURES is filed under lilac
the look in nan’s eye like she is so perfectly pissed the fuck off but she is also weeping lmao
do you also love the tear do you also give books Colors was science green for you pls lmk
a little bit of Vulnerabilityᵀᴹ before i go, which is to say that this book is special to me. writing it reminded me that what i love most about this job is just the work of it—the plain, bare work of language. it really would mean quite a lot to me if you preordered it or requested it at your local library, and i hate saying that because it feels like i’m performing something or trying to manipulate you as a reader (and i hate saying THAT because that ALSO feels like a manipulation, and so on and so on for infinity). but it’s really just the truth. i love the book. i’d love for you to read it.
okay EURGH BYE
alternatively i am wondering if nobody enters does that mean i get the backpack
first of all ew feather oil second of all shoutout to my mother whose primary goal in life seemed at times to be to teach her children that it is not safe to pick up feathers from the ground because they are gross and germy and weird
I am Rory's mother and to all of you I say: you're welcome you are all safe now from feathers
